Wii U eShop
Al igual que en Nintendo 3DS, Wii U también cuenta con Nintendo eShop, disponible desde el 18 de Noviembre del 2012 en EEUU, el 30 de ese mismo mes en Europa, y el 8 de diciembre del 2012 en Japón. En Nintendo eShop podemos adquirir juegos, aplicaciones o entretenimiento multimedia. Las descargas pueden ser bien gratuitas o de pago, siendo las primeras mayoritariamente demos de juegos.
Los juegos en la tienda pueden ser juegos exclusivos que aprovechen las característica de la consola, juegos compatibles con Wii (WiiWare) o juegos de la Consola Virtual, cuyos títulos son de consolas antiguas.

| Una extensión de los ya conocidos WiiWare y DSiWare para descargar software, títulos especialmente creados para utilizar las capacidades de Wii U. Pueden ser tanto aplicaciones, como vídeos, como juegos en descarga digital. Entre los juegos en formato digital, se encuentran los productos disponibles también en formato físico, DLCs y demos. | La Consola Virtual es una sección especializada de la Nintendo eShop en la cual encontraremos joyas que vieron su salida en sistemas antiguos. De momento se cuenta con juegos de NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, Sega Master System, Sega Mega Drive, TurboGrafx-16, Neo Geo, Commodore 64, MSX y Virtual Console Arcade. En el futuro se añadirán juegos de GameCube. | WiiWare, al igual que en Wii, estará disponible para Wii U desde el primer día, el cual se añade mediante una actualización para la Nintendo eShop la cual contiene la librería del Canal Tienda de Wii para WiiWare. Todo el software existente en WiiWare está disponible para su descarga en Wii U a través de la eShop. Similar a usar un juego de Wii en Wii U, WiiWare solo se puede jugar en su resolución original a través del Modo Wii. |

Retail con formato digital
Además del formato físico, algunos títulos de Wii U cuentan con distribución digital dentro de la plataforma Nintendo eShop. Este formato no es exclusivo de Nintendo, si no que la oferta incluye títulos de otras compañías.
De momento se desconocen precios oficiales y qué ventaja supone el formato digital frente al formato físico.
