Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes was redubbed to improve audio quality and provide a more faithful English translation, as the original PlayStation recordings contained background noise that became audible with the GameCube's higher fidelity. The original cast returned, except for Gray Fox, whose role was recast, and the Japanese version was replaced with the English voice acting and subtitles.
Reasons for the Redubbing
Improved Audio Quality:
The original Metal Gear Solid recordings were made in a non-soundproof environment, resulting in audible background noise that became apparent with the GameCube's more advanced audio capabilities.
More Faithful Translation:
The redubbing aimed to provide an English translation closer to the original Japanese script, which had been altered to a degree in the original PlayStation release.
Accurate Character Portrayal:
Some original voice actors had accents that didn't align with their characters' established backgrounds (e.g., the Chinese and Ukrainian accents of Mei Ling and Nastasha, respectively), which were adjusted in the remake.
Consistency:
The change to Gray Fox's voice actor was made because the original game featured the same voice actor for both Gray Fox and Donald Anderson, a change that some found odd.
Changes to the Voice Acting
Return of Original Cast:
The original voice actors for Solid Snake and most other characters reprised their roles for The Twin Snakes.
Recast Gray Fox:
The role of Gray Fox was given to a different voice actor, Rob Paulsen, while Greg Eagles continued to voice Donald Anderson.
Japanese Version:
For the Japanese release of The Twin Snakes, no new Japanese voice acting was recorded; instead, the English voice acting was used with subtitles.
