Do you speak English?

1, 2

I think it is a great idea. Just talking about everything but in english instead of spanish in order to improve our english.

Maybe we could start discussing about why we (Spanish) are so bad with learning other languages.

Cause our classes in school are a joke, and because in other countries there is much more time for english lessons and they simply don't repeat it every year.

Spanish people are not bad learning other languages, there are a lot of bilingual people with their local language (Catalan, Basque, Galician), but I think there is no motivation to learn english, or other languages. I studied at a private school and have quite an advanced level of english, and can speak and write quite a bit of german, but my friends from a public school have no where near this level.

Yes it is. A nice city and a nice, and rather expensive, shop.

Regarding our poor english, I think that english lessons at public schools are not that bad. For example most of the english I know was acquired in a public school. Under my point of view it is mainly due to the lack of motivation in the students as they percive it as a worthless effort (studying english).
People can´t improve their English here because they don´t speak English.
X-D
good initiative! Chicarrero greetings! X-D
I believe that the root of the language problem that we have is that our teachers do not even speak the language that well, which results in them being unable to provide interesting lessons that encourgue us to progress to a higher level of the language when they haven't even achieved that standard themselves.

Cheers mate :D

Perhaps it means: humo en el agua.

I will check the lyrics.

edit: the original title is "Smoke on the water" and it means: humo sobre el agua. The song is about a place beside a lake that is burned and there is smoke on the water.
After all, lack of motivation is also a problem of the system. I guess if you put a fit english girl infront of everybody, that only spoke english, they'd make a much more consistent effort.

The history of Smoke on the Water is in the english Wikipedia.

By the way, why are there so many people from the canaries in this thread? [beer]

Hello girls,

I guess you either just don't like reading, or your English is not good enough for you to understand what DjScream3 meant.

A man walks into a bar with a large suitcase under one arm. He sits at the bar looking morose and the barman brings him a drink over.

“Mighty kind of you,” says the man, “do you want to hear a tune?”

“Holy Smokes! Have you got a musical instrument in the bag?” asks the barman.

“Well, kinda,” says the man as he pulls a tiny stool and a tiny piano out of his bag and sets them on the bar. Next he pulls out an old brass oil lamp, which he places on the bar, and finally he pulls out a tiny wriggling figure, which turns out to be a miniature man in a top hat and tails.

The miniature man sits down on the miniature piano stool and then begins to play the piano beautifully. It’s the most fantastic music the barman has ever heard, and he’s almost moved to tears by the quality of the performance.

“Why,” says the barman “That’s amazing!”

“Huh.” says the man “You wouldn’t say that if you knew the story.”

“Well tell me the story, then!”

“All right”, says the man, “but you’ll have to get me another drink first.”

So the barman fetches him another drink and the man begins to relate his tale.

“…so there I was in Tunis, and this market seller sold me this lamp, claiming there was a genie in it. And to be fair, there was. Only he didn’t tell me everything about the genie — like the fact that each owner only gets one wish, and this“, indicating the miniature man still playing a sweet melody, “— was mine.”

“So if I bought the lamp off you, I’d get a wish?”, asked the barman, rubbing his palms eagerly.

“Yeah, I suppose so, but—”

“I’ll give you two hundred dollars for it, cash.” said the barman, waving the bills in front of the man.

“All right then, here you go, but—”

Taking no notice, the barman rubbed furiously at the lamp, and a genie appeared, blinking.

“I wish for a million bucks!” shouted the barman.

There was a bright flash, a puff of smoke and then the room was suddenly filled with squawking, quacking, and lots — and I do mean lots — of feathers.

“I said BUCKS, not ducks!” yelled the barman.

“Did you really think I’d asked for a twelve-inch pianist?”

Yeah, Alonso rules on F1. Next race on Hungary is for Fernando, and he will reach the number 1 on the World Championship.

Ey, I have a question. Have anyone of you been in the US following an english course?? I will on september and I wonder if I need a visa.

Bye!
I think you need a student visa in order to access american education. It is usually the same in every country, in case of being an EU citizen you can stay up to 3 months (i think) without the need of a visa, and only as a tourist.

Why don't you contact the studies centre you're going to, and ask them? They should have all that info.

Regarding the F1, I don't know what to think. Hamilton has been very fast since the beginning, I'd say faster than Alonso on the key moments, although always "assisted" by the team, counting with Alonso's car and track metrics and so.

But it's also true that Alonso has become better and better with each race, and although having a couple of bad races, he's being there all the time, even taking over on some crucial moments to get back in track.

I honestly don't like the guy, but always ANYONE before any englishman winning anything. They are a bunch of cocky assholes.

Amongst other reasons. Considering a lot of people doesn't even show interest in learning spanish properly, what makes you think they would put the effort into yet another language?

Public school and lots of books here, and imho i'm not doing bad. Heck, i even bought an Actionscript book some years ago just because there were no spanish books about the subject back then. The more you read and understand, the easier. Reading is key to learn other languages since it's difficult to speak them with people around you. And we all know how people usually panics when it comes to reading.

The problem is that students expect the teacher to go to them, and transfer them the knowledge with magic.. or kind of. If you want to learn english you must want to, and work on it.
Reading books, playing video games, watching movies, etc. It all is useful in order to learn english. And don't expect teachers to force you to do that.

The best way to learn foreign languages is travel to countries which native population speak the language you want to know. The languages are living things, tha language change acroos the time, and through our planet (American Spanish are not our Spanish, the americans have their accent, ttheir own vocabulary ...) and I think that, like living thing, the only way to learn a foreign language is living with that language, using It in your daily life.
Going out is not really needed, but it can speed things up, i agree on that. And nowadays, the most living thing is the internet, so making use of communication tools like forums, IRC and online games everybody can learn about almost anything.

Anyways, the will to learn must be always there, or at least some kind of respect for other people's languages. I've met several spanish people both in real life and online games, using that infamous "habla español, puto guiri" over and over again. In fact, every time i'm asked about my nationality people finds it hard to belive i'm spanish. Too polite, they say, and i bet many of you have experienced the same :)
I don't totally agree with you, mimoset. It's very easy to chat via the internet, but speaking is totally different. I live in Ireland (lots of pleople say that they have very good english here) and accents are very difficult. Dublin northside, cork, northern Ireland...

The same applies to england, scotland and so. reading and writing is simpler, since is a more static way of communicate, but speaking is dynamic: accents, sayings, slang, and so. And don't even try to learn london's cockney!

You need to travel and learn the way the language is spoken, in order to really learn the language. And the same happens with spanish, go to latin america and you will see that spanish sounds like a different language there.
Well, you're totally right if we limit the question to just speaking. I thought we were talking about understanding of the language. You still can learn some of those sayings, slang and so on if you chat with people from all over the world, but of course your vocabulary will be way more limited.

Still, i doubt you'll have problems understanding any standard english text, be it newspapers, tv news, websites, videogames or whatever. I said going out is not really needed to properly understand the language and successfully communicate with it, but of course it'll improve your knowledge and fluidity :)

I've never been out of Spain myself, but i've been using english at MMORPGs for quite some time. Of course i lack lots of vocabulary, but if i can't find the words i need, i usually can find a way around it. And yeah, i'm aware there's a lot of room for improvement, but it's just a matter of time :P

[jaja] , this man speaks truth.

I insist on the teaching issue here, those that have been taught by the public system will be just teaching the same way as they were taught in the past, therefore the cycle just carries on.

If those who are already educated and priveliged are at an advantage in terms of their education and can give it to their future students so then the cycle goes on indefinitely for generations until finally everyone has access to the same standard of education regardless of background.

Basiclly I mean "Only native or bilingual teachers" and off you go, all sorted.

I agree with what you're saying. Anyhow, that's not the whole story. There are people that may well know the language perfectly, but they can't teach worth a damn. I've had a handful of english teachers in my time, only one of them was really good, then another one who was pretty good. The rest sucked big donkey balls at teaching.

It's like in the university. You may have there the finest investigators, but that doesn't mean they're going to be good teachers. In fact, I'd say it's more like the contrary, since teaching is so very different from researching, for example.

My point is: yes, the Spanish education system overall is a mess. And not surprisingly, it's not any different with languages. But there's not much more that can be done.

Maybe with the end of the era of getting all tv shows dubbed, with the surge of the p2p and sharing of English-spoken shows, people finally will start "getting" the language.

And for one of the previous posters who said that since language is a live entity, hence it can only be learned in a place where the general population speak it... I completely disagree. All my English comes from what I learned at High School (which wasn't much :P), and what I've learned on my account later, mainly by reading English websites and watching movies in their original language. It's cheaper than packing your bag and going to England XD

BTW, language doesn't change that much. Do you really think one couldn't manage to understand a Spanish speaker from the nineteenth century? There's always the small stuff, but the general idea it's the same. We've got literature dating five hundred years and yet schoolboys can read it (and do read it).

Just my 2 cents XD
Totally agree with Det on the teachers. Plus, knowing you study Engineering like me, you must have met lots of teachers with those characteristics (wonderful researcher, horrid teacher).

I've learnt german from experience in High School & University, 7 years overall. I went to Germany in summer, and quite a lot of people were surprised when I told them I was spanish, and could speak german quite reasonably, 'cause all they had heard from spanish tourists was quite bad german. The point is, you really don't need to be in a country to learn german, english or whatever language, but you do need a teacher or someone who speaks it, to get the first steps going, and put the effort into it.

That last thing is the most important. Learning a language can be compared to playing an instrument. You need to be constant, and put lots of effort. And if you don't play, you'll lose it progressively.
About learning languajes, the main point is the same one that if you are speaking about any other kind of studing : your own desire. I mean, if you do not like to learn one thing, the teacher could be fantastic, and he can do a great work, but you will learn nothing if you are not interesting about it.....
HI!! i want learn speak and writte english
