Nintendo Denies Reported Willingness To Sell Rare Stake
Thursday September 12, 3:37 am ET
TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Nintendo Co. (J.NTD or 7974) Thursday denied a U.S. media report it is "willing to sell" a controlling stake in U.K. game software developer Rare Ltd.
There has been speculation about Microsoft Corp.'s interest in buying Rare to make more software exclusively for its Xbox console. A Nintendo spokesman said, hypothetically, the company would consider what to do with its Rare shareholding if actually contacted by Microsoft or Rare, but there hasn't been any such contact.
Nintendo owned 38% of Rare's voting rights through U.S. subsidiaries at the end of last March, but Rare hasn't supplied any software for Nintendo's Gamecube or Game Boy consoles over the past one year or so, the spokesman said.
The Los Angels Times said in a separate report Microsoft is interested in acquiring Rare, citing unnamed sources.
On the Tokyo Stock Exchange Thursday, Nintendo shares ended up 2.6% at Y14,380 Thursday. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average closed up 0.2% at 9415.23.

No me lo trago, simple movimiento para desorientar hasta el X02... IGN no se jugaría su dignidad si no fuera cierto.
Why are Nintendo of America Leaking the Rare/MS Story?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have no doubt it is Nintendo who leaked the same information to IGN and Reuters.
1.The IGN and Reuters stories are too similar to have been gotten from different sources.
2.According to Matt C, IGN didn't take a look at Reuters before posting it's story.
3.Both articles refer to how much Rare has contributed to Nintendo sales in the last couple of years. The 9.5% in 2001 and 1.5% in 2002 is trying to downplay the importance of Rare using very dodgy reasoning. Same specific stats in both reports.
4.Additionally "a source close to Nintendo Co. Ltd.", according to Reuters, says they had the chance to buy Rare but declined, again downplaying the story. IGN also states the rumours had been "anonymously confirmed by numerous credible, high-level insiders" and that Nintendo, again, declined the offer to buy Rare is emphasised.
5.Reuters mention they asked Rare and Microsoft for comment but not Nintendo.
Conclusion? They've both been fed by Nintendo of America who're trying to manage the story.
But Why?
Of course Nintendo will want to spin the story, mentioning lack of sales, saying they declined to buy Rare and emphasising the different approach of partnering 3rd parties. But while negotiations are ongoing this leak could jeopardise the talks between Rare and Microsoft, the talks could easily flounder on the information coming out. Nintendo leaked the story and Nintendo will know the deal could collapse due to their actions.
Do NoA want the deal to collapse? After-all Rare is under their direction, or at least it was when Arakawa and Lincoln were at the helm. Losing such a big development studio under its control shifts even more power away from NoA.
The dispatching of Rare could well be a NCL decision, Miyamoto seems to care little for the group and wasn't it Yoshihiro Mori who recently spent a year formulating Nintendo's strategy in Europe? He may not have become president as tipped but being senior managing director and in charge of "corporate analysis" his word is likely to be paramount on the matter of Rare.
So being really Machiavellian is there a huge power struggle within Nintendo? Is this the last desperate throw of the dice by NoA to try and keep power that continues to slide. Or, is it just a well orchestrated manoeuvre by both parts of the Nintendo empire to iron over the sale?
