Problema al intentar instalar driver eagle

Buenas, estoy intentado instalar el driver eagle para poder usar mi módem sagem fast 800 en linux pero no lo consigo.
No tengo mucha idea de Linux y no lo entiendo del todo bien, pero el caso es que me he informado y parece ser que en la nueva versión de ubuntu 5.10 el driver no funciona por un problema con la versión de gcc, ya que la versión usada para el kernel es la 3.4.5 y la que usa por default la nueva ubuntu la 4.0.2
Entonces, instalé la versión 3.4 de gcc. Y utilizo el comando export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-3.4 para que la versión que use en el configure sea la que quiero, no obstante, al final me aparece el mismo mensaje de error que si uso la default, que la versión del gcc usada para el kernel y la utilizada ahora no coinciden. Y no me deja seguir con el make, me da muchos errores.

Si no me equivoco usas un kernel precompilado. Compilate uno tu mismo y prueba.

Edito: no habia visto. Si puedes procura ejecutar (cuando instalas asi un programa) el ./configure y el make como usuario normal. El make install ya como root
instala tb el gcc 3,4 y haz lo siguiente
$ MAKEFLAGS="CC=gcc-3.4" make
