El Shaddai Combat 'Like Rhythm Game'
Devil May Cry and Okami designer Sawaki Takeyasu has revealed that the combat system in El Shaddai, his first major project, is similar to a rhythm-action game.
In a NowGamer interview, the director stressed that he wanted the stunning El Shaddai: Acension of the Metatron to be accessible to players of all skill levels.
Takeyasu explained that, "El Shaddai was meant for all gamers, from the light users to the heavy users. The light users can play easily because the three-button system is very simple. But this doesn’t mean that hardcore gamers can’t enjoy it, because of the timed combos. There are a lot of different ways of getting variety in actions. It’s almost like a rhythm game, finding the timing of pressing the buttons."
When asked about how hardcore players would respond to the mechanic, the director stressed that, "There are other elements to the combat system we’ll be revealing at a later date. It’s like the Street Fighter series. There are six buttons and you know exactly what they do, just punch and kick, but there’s a lot of depth there."
While the game is clearly rendered entirely in 3D with various 3D models, it uses a softer version of the now-classic cartoon-style cel-shading technique that made earlier 3D games like Jet Set Radio and Viewtiful Joe look like cartoons in motion. As a matter of fact, in many cases, the game abandons clear-cut textures and even entire swathes of scenery for rows of soft, washed-out, bright colors, which gives the game an eerie, otherworldly look.
