Van Halen es una banda estadounidense de hard rock, llamada así por los hermanos Eddie Van Halen y Alex Van Halen (guitarrista y baterista respectivamente).

El primer álbum de la banda, Van Halen de 1978 es ampliamente considerado como un hito en la historia del rock. Con este primer estreno, la banda se estableció como un líder en el emergente y desafiante mundo hard rock de los EE.UU. En particular, el guitarrista de la banda, Eddie Van Halen, se hizo rápidamente famoso gracias a su técnica y sensibilidad musical. Hoy en día es considerado como uno de los guitarristas de rock más innovadores e influyentes; otros de los rasgos distintivos del grupo en su etapa considerada más clásica, era el estilo versátil y autoparódico de su cantante David Lee Roth, conocido como "Diamond" Dave.

De 1978 a 1998 la banda editó 11 álbumes (todos ellos estuvieron entre los 20 mejores de Billboard). La banda ha vendido más de 80 millones de álbumes mundialmente y ha recibido varias nominaciones a los premios Grammy, ganando uno con el álbum "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" en 1991. Van Halen figura en el Libro Guinness de los Récords con la mayor cantidad de Nº 1's en la lista de rock de Billboard. Según la Asociación de la industria discográfica de Estados Unidos, Van Halen es Nº 19 en la lista los artistas que más han vendido jamás (habiendo vendido más de 56 millones de álbumes en EE.UU.).

Activision confirma que Van Halen no estará al completo en su Guitar Hero: Van Halen debido a problemas internos del grupo, con lo que se descarta que hayan sido problemas de desarrollo del juego.

Los ausentes serán el bajista y el vocal del grupo para los que ya se han buscado sustitutos en el hijo de Eddie Van Halen como bajista y de David Lee Roth como cantante.
