£150 for PlayStation 3 deposit?
Sony is in talks with retailers about a pre-order strategy to fight the ebay scammers.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is in talks with retailers to introduce an allocation scheme for PlayStation 3 that would see consumers pay a deposit of £150 to go on the waiting list for a console.
The Sony plan is being introduced, according to industry trade paper MCV, to counter the ebay scamming that took place at the launch of Xbox 360. This was where buyers would speculate with the consoles, buying several then selling them for a high price to cover the cost of the console they would keep.
However there's no reason at all that this scheme would prevent this phenomenon. Buyers could still gain several pre-orders, albeit with an initial outlay, and continue to take advantage of the widely expected shortage of hardware come the launch of PlayStation 3.
It will be interesting to see if the scheme gets past the talks stage. And if Sony wants that much money from a customer, will it provide a legally binding contract to provide a console at launch?
